The Ulysses application is known even to those who did not intend to install it - one can hardly remember such a complicated name, but the recognizable logo is definitely etched in the memory. Moreover, even if you want to start working in it, it won't work - it's paid (and quite expensive), it's not immediately clear and, as a consequence, prefers not to be used by those who do not need it. And it's not needed by those who work with text one way or another, but by those who work with text all the time and a lot, because otherwise you can get by with other alternatives. Ultimately, Ulysses is a tool for professionals rather than for amateurs, and this positioning is very correct. Why use Markdown
Personally, although I do work with text a lot, Markdown has been something unknown to me for a long time, as it probably is to many of our readers. Not even that, I _thought_ I knew nothing about Markdown, although many of us have used it in our daily lives, sometimes even casually. You may have tried changing the text of a messenger message-a word or phrase enclosed between special characters (like asterisks or slashes) changes the appearance of the text. Like this:
It turns out that this is a primitive form of Markdown markup. Why primitive? Markdown has no rudiments. Ease of use allows you to save on interface, because it's enough to write some code with shortcuts and symbols, then - place in a place which is quickly accessible, and then the user will focus on the text, and not on a bunch of beautiful buttons (by the way, the buttons can also not draw, which provides speed and facilitates work).
And the uniformity of Markdown allows you to use the markup in different applications - the text will appear correctly everywhere. This is, by the way, one of the most powerful advantages of such markup (and, as a consequence, the applications that work with this very markup) over Conditional Word - which, as you know, has different versions that can display the same format in different ways. Therefore, for example, students suffer a lot during the period of writing theses - each university has its own conditions on the "textile", and because of the different versions of design can "fly off". Authors of books, monographs or articles suffer for about the same reason when they send their materials to magazines, newspapers and other printed (and not only) editions.
Markdown is designed to alleviate or even eliminate this suffering - if only Word, there's also Pages, which also creates a lot of content. And knowing the markup, you can write even in standard notepad - in any case, everything will be transferred correctly.
We do not have such a problem in our editorial office - we write materials in any convenient application and design the texts ourselves, so there is no need for version compatibility. Hence, there is no need to use unified markup.
By the way, Markdown is actively used among programmers, and there, as you understand, code unification is more important than anyone else. And since programmers are a very large stratum of "text writers", markup will continue to be relevant.
We have now covered why Markdown markup is useful and also realized that it is not suitable for everyone. Moreover, those who do use Markdown markup in their everyday lives already have a number of preferences for the programs they work in. I suppose there is a cohort of authors who advocate "pure Markdown" - they work exclusively in Notepad, because they know the necessary elements of style by heart. But to be honest, here personally I had some problems with the installation. At first I bought the program on the iPhone, but it took a very long time to connect to the Macbook - on the desktop it opened in read mode, purchases were not restored. Connecting with customer service I was not able to get anywhere for a long time, either (I should note right away that I had the same iCloud account, don't worry about that). It took me a couple of days to get the applications together, when I ran Ulysses from my desktop with the Option key pressed (in order to create a log and send it to support).

But I still have problems with the synchronization speed. I write text on the desktop, then I start to finish writing on the iPhone - there is no instant update, I have to wait for several dozens of minutes (I waited for 3 hours to be sure). I do not know what this problem is, but the conditional Bear or Evernote updates instantly.
The application has 2 navigation columns and clean text, so that nothing else is distracting. Well, and working fonts, line spacing, and just ease of use is much higher than in the analogues. It should be noted right away that Ulysses uses a specific Markdown XL markup which is a bit different from regular Markdown. I would recommend to try to work in this mode but then switch to markup if you need to exchange text with other users who do not have Ulysses, otherwise you might have some problems.
So, the simplicity is that all the text is displayed clearly, but it doesn't change much, and you can see what elements of the layout you're using. In general, you just have to sit down and try it, because from the outside the markup seems quite complicated. It's nice to work in it, though - you mark up right in the text without being distracted by editing (no need to click on other buttons and so on).
You can write so that the text is then imported into Medium or WordPress. Although I prefer to double-check the text the old-fashioned way, using copypaste.

In general, the main stratum of updates is aimed specifically at working with tablets, since they have a keyboard, and the device itself has become a substitute for a laptop (as conceived by Apple). You can work more flexibly with the application "Files", import and export different materials and text, use the cursor when editing.
It's pretty simple - chunks of text are tagged with which you can sort the text (not just by title). This can be developed into the organization of your own blogs or diaries, if there is such a need.
It is about the fact that when creating large arrays of text (for example, the same example with the diploma) the author uses references, sources and data that should not go into the layout or the final version of the text, but they must be present. So, the author can mark this text as "additional material," and it will not go into the final version. Pretty handy, especially if you need to add comments on the code or text.
To tell the truth, I did not use the Ulysses app because of its price, and also because it was too conservative - when I started writing, Markdown was not common, so it did not make sense to look for any special apps for text. I don't know why, but when I started working in Ulysses, the text writes itself - don't think of it as advertising, the developers didn't "drop it" on us, I'm just sharing a strange observation. That is, even if you do not use markup, the application will still pleasantly surprise you.

Although Ulysses definitely has one disadvantage: the price. A monthly subscription will cost $5 and an annual subscription will cost $40. It doesn't seem like such a big sum, but the price tag is still a bit steep, and the average user will obviously be unhappy with such figures. I would like you to treat this application as a professional tool that will greatly simplify your work processes and bring you money.
That is, if you write texts and make a living out of it, if you appreciate convenience and ease of use - try Ulysses. Because the application occupies about the same niche "for professionals who write text" as Notion is for professionals who want to organize their workspace, OmniFocus is for professionals who have many work tasks, and Timepage is for professionals who need a powerful calendar.
It is clear that these applications are unlikely to interest most users, and they will be purchased either by those who simply like this functionality and are willing to pay for it, or by those who can no longer do without this functionality. Ulysses is expensive, it doesn't always sync quickly, plus there are some installation issues, but even with that it's very convenient and very cool.
