Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Guide

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery game guide

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery - another interesting game based on the Harry Potter universe, which tells an interesting story about the Cursed Vaults. The action takes place a few years before Harry Potter entered Hogwarts, but after his birth - during the game we will meet both new students and characters we know from the original series of books (in particular, the Weasley brothers and Cedric Diggory).

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery storyline

In 1984 (and Harry Potter was born in 1980 and made Voldemort disappear in 1981) the protagonist enters the school, where the Allocating Hat directs him to the faculty of the player's choice. Here it is worth noting right away that regardless of gender and faculty, the protagonist will have friends and enemies, and the story will somewhat resemble Harry Potter himself, except that his associates are less expressive. The protagonist also has a peculiar reputation - his older brother Jacob, as a student at Hogwarts, got wind of some cursed vaults, which is strictly forbidden to talk about, and some places in the castle are forbidden to visit. The Cursed Vaults are not known to anyone, and no one doubts their authenticity, but they do exist, as you can imagine.

As you remember, Hogwarts, according to Hagrid and Professor Dumbledore from the first part, is the safest place besides Gringotts bank. So the castle became a haven for powerful artifacts, for which separate rooms were allocated - there they were stored for a long time, and, as you understand, represented a great danger. Since no one believed in their existence, as in the situation with the Chamber of Secrets from the second part, there were enthusiasts among students and teachers who were engaged in the search for the Cursed Vaults, leaving records and reflections for future generations. Eventually a certain circle of people was formed who were absolutely certain of the existence of the vaults, but it was impossible to convey this to the administration.

The main character's name was rarely spoken, and even attempts were made to associate him with Voldemort, so the protagonist is remembered as a bully, a rebel, and even tried to associate him with Voldemort. The protagonist's older brother is remembered as a bully and rebel, his name rarely spoken and even tried to link him to Voldemort, so the protagonist is initially at a disadvantage. From this point on, we take over the control of the character and try to find the Cursed Vaults to once again try to prove the existence of danger in the castle and clear his brother's good name.

How to play Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

To begin with, it's worth noting right away that this game is quite different from its PC counterparts, and is a point-and-click action game grounded in the energy we spend on certain activities. The castle is conventionally divided into several levels-stories, which in turn have specific rooms/classes/locations. We have to study for 7 years, and as part of the learning process, the protagonist will take classes in Potions, Defense Against the Dark Forces, Spells, Transfiguration, and so on. It is in these very classes that we spend our accumulated energy - the class is divided into several parts, for each of which we get stars, experience and points, and we get points based on the results of the classes. The school has the traditional calculation of the total number of points, at the end of the year we participate in the Cup of the school - for the victory (if our department scores more points) we are given 100 diamonds, which can be spent on unique improvements.

Energy in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

At the same time in the game itself there is a main plot, which consists not only of attending classes and committing certain actions, but also of participation in various activities (Quidditch, caring for magical creatures, communicating with friends). There we will also spend energy, getting coins, diamonds, experience and some items in return. In general, we'll have to grind a lot and a long time - everything as in the real learning process. Some rooms/locations open when you go to a certain academic year - as you remember, visiting Hogsmeade is allowed from the 3rd year.

How to Develop a Character in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

The main character has 3 attributes that determine his development and give you an advantage when you:

  • Chatting with friends
  • You participate in duels

Character Attributes:

  • Courage (Courage) - Reflects, in fact, your courage, fortitude, and self-confidence. You can make money by flying on a broomstick, buying clothes and animals, as well as brave (not impertinent) responses to teachers, friends, and detractors.
  • Empathy (Empathy) is a measure of your friendliness, tolerance, and ability to understand others. You can earn it by taking spell lessons, buying clothes and animals, and supporting dialogues.
  • Knowledge (Knowledge) is how smart you are. You can earn it by taking Potions and Transfiguration classes, by buying clothes and animals, and by giving clever answers.

You can customize your character as much as possible - change the shape of his face, nose, lips and eyes, buy him clothes and jewelry that will enhance his attributes. True, there aren't many options, and beautiful items are also purchased for diamonds, not for coins, which is not very nice. But the name can always be changed, in contrast to the faculty - if you choose any, then you can no longer change it, you have to tear down the game and go through it again. Conditions as close to reality - and you thought that in the magical world everything is done by magic wand?

Energy in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

It is necessary for you to pass lessons or perform some actions (for example, searching for food for magical creatures). Application is as simple as possible - each action costs a certain amount of energy (from 1 to 5). One unit of energy is restored every 4 minutes, so it's worth putting a notice - your pool at the beginning of the game is barely enough for 1/5 of a lesson, and for skipping lessons (if you haven't collected the right number of stars) you get points taken away. Losing points can also mean that you will be treated badly by your classmates. However, we remember what happened to Harry Potter in 1st year, when he practically ruined Gryffindor's chances of winning the School Cup for his night out.

Well, and if you buy more animals for the crystals, the energy will be restored faster.

Friends in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

As I said, you'll meet different characters, including some we know from the book. Communicating with your friends is, in the game, a formal process, because in the story you will still cross paths with them, no matter how friendly you are. So, this friendship is needed in order to earn diamonds / energy / unique items. We can develop our friendship in two ways - when we eat lunch in the Main Hall and when we play Spit Stones (both locations are on Lower Floor - West). The process is interesting, too -- we're asked different questions, and we have to give the right answers. It's a pity, of course, that they are all in English, but most of the questions are understandable and answered without any problems, if you are familiar with the world of Harry Potter. This, by the way, is where your attributes come in handy - if the protagonist's scores are higher, he will get bonuses for answering; if lower - penalties. So do not pump friendship if your attributes are low - it will not bring any benefit.

Dueling in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

Probably the only thing in the game that depends on your skill. You fight opponents from different faculties, each of you has a stamina scale, which decreases when you cast a spell or use a potion. There are three stances - attacking (aggressive), defensive (defensive) and penetrating (sneaky), which work on the principle of "rock-paper-scissors": aggressive > sneaky > defensive. Your dueling strategy should be based on how much your attributes are higher than your opponent's, as well as what spells you possess. There is a cost to participate in duels, by the way.

duels in Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery

For example (1st year)

In the aggressive stance we have the Expelliarmus spell and the ability to cast a potion that deals the same damage as the spell. But the spell depends on the Knowledge attribute, and the potion depends on the Courage attribute. Accordingly, you look at your opponent's attributes and choose the one with the biggest difference to deal bonus damage. If the difference in attributes is the same, hit with the spell - it has a small chance of stun, which will cancel your opponent's next turn.

In the defensive stance we can drink a healing potion that restores stamina for the next 2 turns, or cast a potion that deals 10 damage.

In the sneaky stance, we have a Flippendo spell that deals 15 damage.

Obviously, we should play either aggresive or sneaky, because it's not profitable for us to defend - we won't deal as much damage. And sneaky is more advantageous - you can finish the game in 2 spells. But don't start with sneaky - it's unlikely that your opponent will defend right away, so it's better to attack your opponent, especially since if two identical stances meet, no one deals damage, and the one with less stamina will accumulate 2 units. Since you're stronger than your opponent a priori, you can try to fire your aggressive - sneaky - sneaky checks (that's 3 turns) in the hope that your first spell will interrupt your opponent's sneaky and go to a draw, and then your opponent will probably defend to drink the potion. Well, you should only defend yourself when you see that your opponent is abusing his attacks - otherwise you'll just get beaten up with penetrating attacks that do more damage.

But if you have another, more effective tactic, share it in the comments.

In fact, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a long and addictive game that we can talk about for a long time, so we will periodically update our guide.
