It's been seven days since the release of the first beta version of macOSMojave. We have tested the new Apple operating system and decided to share with you what new features the developers added to the next macOS.
31 new features you'll find in the new macOS Mojave
Dark Mode
This is one of the most noticeable innovations of the updated operating system. The suggestion to change the interface to a darker color scheme appears on the first login, immediately after installation.
Opinion: It looks good, but my eyes get very tired. In addition, there is still no normal optimization of some of the regular applications. iTunes, for example, doesn't look very good yet.
Color accent
Two items appeared at once in the Settings -> Basic menu. In the appearance you can change the theme (light/dark), and opposite the Color Emphasis field there are 8 new colors at once. Selecting them changes some interface elements, like drop-down lists.
Dynamic wallpaper
There are three new wallpapers in macOS Mojave with an image of a mound. In addition, there is a special mode of changing the wallpaper depending on the time of day.
Sorting screensavers
The screensaver sorting display in macOS has been changed. Instead of two columns, there is now one.
Randomly selecting screensavers
To avoid getting tired of the same screensaver in standby mode, the developers have added the option of randomly selecting the style of screensaver display.
Indicator of recent programs
There is a new section in the Dock. It contains the applications you use most often.
Additional settings for Mission Control
For easy access to open windows, you can use the advanced keyboard shortcut settings.
New privacy settings
In macOS Mojave, applications can restrict access to certain elements of the system. There are restrictions for camera, microphone, system administration, advertising, automation, and program data.
Prevent viewing notifications when locked
There is an additional menu item for hiding notifications when your Mac is locked. Two options are available: always and "when Mac is unlocked".
In the new OS, Apple has kicked Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn out of the pre-installed Internet accounts. They have also removed them from the Share menu in the Safari browser.
New Software Updates item
A new Software Update item has been added to Settings. There is not much information in it, but it is still more convenient to use instead of launching the App Store.
Parental Control
One of the key features of macOS Mojave is Parental Controls. In the new OS, you can remotely control your child's MacBook or iMac.
That is, instead of a new account on one Mac, an account is created for the remote computer.
Quick actions for files: passwords
Apple has promised to simplify interaction with system files. Now in the context menu, when selecting multiple files, you can set a password to open them.
If you select this option, you must specify a password. Then the system will pack the selected files.
Quick Actions: PDF
By selecting several pictures and tapping the PDF menu, you get a glued PDF file in a fraction of a second. The system does not ask any additional questions.
Quick actions: turn
In the new OS, you can rotate a hundred or so photos in one fell swoop. This can be done from the context menu without any additional manipulation.
Sorting files on the desktop
In order not to clutter up the desktop, in macOS Mojave Apple has included an algorithm for sorting into stacks. This item is selected from the context menu. By specifying the sorting type, all files of the same type (pictures, videos or documents) are combined into one "stack".
One tap on this stack gives access to all the files.
Sorting stacks of files
Created stacks of files can also be organized.
Advanced Continuity Mode
You can insert photos and videos taken directly on the #iPhone into the regular applications.
New display mode in Finder
The regular Finder file manager has a new display mode. It is much more convenient than the outdated CoverFlow from previous OS versions. Users have access to expanded EXIF information about photos.
Quick Photo Functions
The new mode added a quick access mode to several actions: add markup, rotate, export to PDF, set passwords.
New screenshot editor
One of the most tangible changes is the completely redesigned screenshot editor. After pressing the key combination CMD + Shift + 4 (3), you can select several options for taking a screenshot:
- highlighted area
- selected window
- full screen
- video recording of the selected area
- video of the entire screen
Additionally, there is a timer delay time setting for taking a screenshot and a folder for saving it. The finished screenshot is placed in the buffer zone in the lower right corner of the screen for a few seconds.
A brand new Mac App Store
This is another major achievement for Apple developers. An all-new Mac App Store with a total redesign, detailed descriptions, video demonstrations of app functionality, themed sections, and improved navigation.
Perhaps this is one of the main reasons to upgrade.
Increased safety
MacBookPro owners with the Touch Bar may now not have to worry about having their fingerprints stolen. Apple has restricted app access to the finger pad map. The less known the developer is, the smaller fragment of the fingerprint pattern he will get.
Improved Preview
MacOS has long used the space bar to quickly view the contents of files. Now you can select additional actions from the preview window: format the document, add markup, rotate or share.
Recorder
It's happening! In macOS Mojave, there is a simple voice recorder for quickly adding audio notes.
Stocks
The functionality to monitor stocks and securities has been put into a separate application. It looks good. In addition, there is news that contributes to price changes for certain positions.
Appendix Home
For owners of "smart" devices compatible with Apple's HomeKit, a gift has arrived. The Home app is now available on macOS as well. You can set automation scenarios and add new devices. Everything is just like on iOS.
Appendix News
Apple did not buy news aggregators and publications for nothing. The company was preparing to launch its own news product. A corresponding application appeared in macOS.
Group FaceTime calls
Fans of perpetually glitchy Skype can breathe a sigh of relief. With the release of iOS12 and macOS Mojave, users now have access to group video conferencing. The maximum number of participants is 32.
Blocking access in Safari
Apple has decided to fight Internet resources that abuse access to users' personal data. The Safari browser settings now include a tougher blocker. Any site that wants to access the microphone, camera, or geo-position will be required to ask the user for permission.
Site icons on the Touch Bar
This seems to be the only innovation that affects the Touch Bar. The icons (logos) of websites opened in Safari will be displayed on the #TouchBar. Of course, if the webmasters of a particular resource set them up.
This is probably all that the new macOS Mojave operating system has to offer.
It's hard to say that we saw a number of innovations. Apple simply improved some elements of the system, making it more convenient. The main focus of the developers was on optimizing and fixing bugs.
Considering that we tested the system immediately after the release of the first beta version for developers, I can safely say - Apple did not lose face. MacOS Mojave is very stable and does not load up the processor or RAM.
