iPhone XR - the first budget iPhone with a frameless design and Face ID. This is the new universal smartphone from Apple, which is suitable for everyone. If you currently own an iPhone 6, you need to buy this particular model.
The iPhone XR will be a complete stranger to you. Because of the new design, you'll have to get used to the new gesture control system. Instead of Touch ID, it's now Face ID. Nevertheless, you're sure to enjoy games and videos on the big 6.1-inch screen.
It will take some time to get used to all the updates, but we can help you with that. Below we've gathered for you the 25 most useful tips for using the iPhone XR
1. Tap to wake up
To activate the iPhone XR screen, all you have to do is tap it. This is a very convenient and fast way to view your notifications without even tapping the side button.
2. Home Screen
There is no Home button on the iPhone XR. To return to the Home screen, simply swipe up from the indicator at the very bottom of the screen.
3. Application Switch
To open the app switcher, you need to swipe upwards from the display, but stop in the center of the screen. Alternatively, to speed up the process, you can swipe from the bottom left corner to the right at a 45-degree angle. This opens the app switcher faster.
4. Notification Center
To open the Notification Center and view all your notifications, swipe down from the notch on the screen.
5. Control center
To open the Control Point, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen.
6. Apple Pay
To activate Apple Pay, tap the side button twice. Then bring your smartphone to your face to perform Face ID authentication.
7. Recent applications
There is a very handy gesture that allows you to switch between recently used applications. Just swipe left and right on the Home indicator at the bottom of the screen.
How do I take screenshots without the Home button? Press the side and volume down buttons at the same time.
To activate Siri, press the side button. You can also use voice activation with "Hello Siri".
To restart your smartphone, press the side button and one of the volume buttons at the same time.
11. Forced reboot
This is just a type of reboot, so your data stays safe and sound. Press the volume up button, volume down button, and then press the side button until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
Even though the iPhone XR is a budget model, it also has a TrueDepth camera and Face ID system. With it, you can use the Animoji and Memoji features. With Memoji, you can turn yourself into an animated character. To do this, go to Messages, open a dialog and click on the Animoji icon.
13. Portrait selfies
Because this smartphone has a TrueDepth camera, you can take portrait selfies. In the Camera app, select Portrait mode and point the camera at yourself.
14. Managing notifications
In iOS 12, you can manage notifications directly from the lock screen. Swipe the notification to the left and select "Manage". Here you can completely disable notifications for a given app or deliver notifications silently.
15. Horizontal mode
The iPhone XR supports horizontal mode in apps, just like the iPhone XS Max. Open Notes or Mail and simply rotate your smartphone to use two panels at once.
16. Face ID error
Face ID works perfectly in most cases, but sometimes authentication does not work on the first try. If this happens, you don't have to enter your password. Swipe the screen upwards to immediately trigger a second authentication attempt.
17. Second Face for Face ID
If you want to open your smartphone to your loved one or child, you can add a second face for Face ID.
18. Virtual Home button
If you can't get used to the new gestures, you can add a virtual Home button. To do this, go to Settings -> Basic -> Universal Access -> AssistiveTouch and configure the function. Don't forget to add actions for double tap, long tap and 3D Touch.
19. the depth effect
Even though the iPhone XR has only one main camera, it can still take portrait pictures using the system functions. However, they will not always turn out well. Luckily, you can adjust the depth effect in your finished photo. Open the photo and click "Edit" and then use the slider.
20. Fast charging
The iPhone XR comes with a 5W power adapter. If you use your smartphone a lot, it's worth buying a fast charging adapter. If you have an iPad, you can use a 12W adapter from it to charge your smartphone faster.
You can also buy the Apple 30W adapter and USB-C cable. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, buy the Anker PowerPort 2 30W adapter.
21. RAW images
The standard Camera app on the iPhone is pretty good, but if you want to control exposure, focus, shutter speed, etc. yourself, use the third-party Halide app. With it, you can take pictures in RAW format. RAW photos can then be edited in the app Snapseed.
22. Siri commands
The iPhone XR is pretty smart. You can use the Commands app to automatically perform entire chains of actions with voice commands. You can create your own commands or use pre-made ones.
23. Swimming with the iPhone XR
The iPhone XR is IP67 protected against water and dust. This means that in fact it is invulnerable only to splashing. You should not swim with the smartphone, as well as keep it under water for too long.
24. Apple Care+ Warranty
We recommend that you buy the Apple Care+ warranty in case your new smartphone is stolen or lost. In these cases, you will receive a brand new smartphone with the warranty.
25. Preview messages
By default, message previews on the iPhone XR are hidden until you sign in with Face ID. This is a great security feature, but some will find it inconvenient. Fortunately, you can turn it off in Settings -> Notifications -> Show Thumbnails: Always.
